Negative Exponents

A negative exponent is simply moving the exponent below the fraction bar. Lets take a power of 10. If we take 10³ we get 10*10*10 = 1000. If the exponent were negative, say 10⁻³, it would equal 1/10³, or 1/(10*10*10), or just 1/1000. This goes for any number, and any power. 2³ = 8, wheras 2⁻³ = 1/2³ = 1/8. The same goes for 5² = 25 whereas 5⁻² = 1/5² = 1/25
