设S是向量空间V的非空子集.S的跨度（由span（S）表示）是包含S中向量的所有线性组合的集合。为方便起见，我们定义span（∅）= {0} 。

设S是向量空间W中的一组向量.S跨越的子空间定义为包含S的V的所有子空间的交点W.当S是有限的向量集时，S = {α1，α2，...， αn}，我们简单地将W称为由向量α1，α2，...，αn跨越的子空间。
